Making Art a Profession through Art Studies / Art Education

Kunst studieren oder Kunst ausbildung

The profession of an artist is a recognized occupation. Its main activity is to create images using various materials based on personal ideas or external visions (such as client commissions).

In Germany, the term "artist" is not legally protected and therefore does not necessarily reflect the quality of an artist's work. On the other hand, the term "art painter" requires training at a certified institution.

Despite the existence of this profession for many years, it is now only offered in a few institutions in Germany. The training, which takes place in art schools or academies, largely focuses on craftsmanship and practical artistic topics.

Kunstschule

Art Painter Study Program can be undertaken full-time or part-time

Training time

The training period ranges from two to four years and is conducted entirely at the chosen institution. You can choose between full-time and part-time study options.

Content of the Training

The training includes fundamentals of realistic painting and drawing, and handling various materials. Additionally, topics such as composition, art history, painting restoration, artist marketing, art business, and anatomy may be taught.

Requirements

Key requirements for art studies include artistic interest, spatial imagination, creativity, and drawing skills. Furthermore, knowledge in areas such as technique, materials, color effects, and compositions is advantageous. There is no legally required educational qualification needed to pursue this profession; however, some institutions may require a secondary school diploma. Additionally, a minimum age requirement (e.g., 16 years old) may be imposed, along with other criteria set by the institution.

Financing

As it is a full-schooling program, tuition fees are unavoidable, and their amount varies depending on the training institution. However, if the institution is state-recognized, students can apply for BAföG (Federal Training Assistance Act) or educational loans.

Final Examination

The final examination consists of both practical and theoretical parts.

There are at least two examiners: one provided by the institution and one from the relevant Ministry of Art.

The practical part, which usually involves creating a painting, engages students for several weeks. Additionally, there is an oral and a written component.

Upon successful completion of this examination, the graduate becomes a state-recognized art painter.

Your Career Prospects after Art Studies or Art Education

Art painters can work as freelance artists. In Germany, "artist" is not a legally protected term and therefore does not indicate the quality of artworks or works. However, the works of an art painter imply that they have completed training at a certified institution.

Furthermore, art painters can undertake commissioned work for various industries or find employment in theaters, variety shows, art schools/academies, tattoo studios, advertising, film, or gaming companies.

An Example from the Gaming and Film Industry

As a state-certified art painter, the profession of Game Artist is particularly relevant in the video game industry, which involves the visual design of video games. This may specialize in 2D or 3D concept art. Other careers in this industry include Game Designer, Game Programmer, and Game Producer.

In the film industry, careers such as cartoon animator or character designer are available.

The Academy of Fine Art Germany, located in Hesse, is the only institution in Germany with a focused curriculum in realistic drawing and painting leading to a state-recognized professional title. Due to the emphasis on realistic artistic craftsmanship, graduates have significant advantages in the job market. They can earn a living with their acquired skills without solely depending on galleries or buyers.
